The third album by Toto, Turn Back, was a failure in 1981. However they made amends with their fourth release, Isolation, which contained two hits, including the title song and Roseanna. The album and tour helped them become a household name all over the world.
After a brief hiatus, Toto returns with the album Fahrenheit. The album is an departure from the ballads on previous albums, and features some heavy rock. The album was their first album to go platinum in North America.
During the recording of the band's fifth album the band loses their manager and are financially in trouble. They decide to change their name and create a new album with the new producer. Lead vocalist Fergie Frederiksen departs and is replaced by Joseph Williams, son of the legendary film composer John Williams and 1950s actress Barbara Ruick. Joseph is a more natural frontman than Frederiksen and gives the band a much-needed boost.

Drummer Shem von Schroeck took over, but the band was not the same without Paich and Phillinganes.
